My first impression of the Aborigines in film came from watching Rabbit Proof Fence in class. The movie shows how poorly they were treated and how they were forced to abandon their culture and adopt the Western culture. It was cool to visit the Tjapukai Aborigines Cultural Park and see how the Aboriginal culture was preserved. We did the stereotypical boomerang and spear throwing and learned how to play the didgeridoo. I talked with one of the young men about my age who worked there (he was wearing a loincloth type outfit with face and body paint) and discovered that it was his summer job. I was surprised he was just doing it to make some money and to have a fun job but then I realized that he was just like anyone else his age looking for a job. Of course he took pride in preserving his culture but it wasn’t the motivating factor.
